University of Delaware Campus, Viewed from Kirkbride Lecture Hall
In Albums: Newark, DE colleges bicycling brick

This photo is taken near the heart of the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. This photo was taken from the second-floor outdoor balcony or walkway on Kirkbride Lecture Hall, a butt-ugly building that is acharacteristic of the congruent and attractive architecture on the rest of the campus.
This photo also shows the diversity of how different trees handle spring. Some trees, like the large American Elm in the distance, are bare. Others are in various stages of leafing out. One large tree in the distance, to the right of the elm, looks fully leafed out, with lush, deep green foliage. A lone evergreen, the Norway Spruce on the left, shows last year's foliage, a deep green color, with ample new growth a lighter green color on the tips.
The University buildings pictured here are highly attractive. I especially like this view. Also pictured are brick sidewalks and a brick terrace with bike racks. There is much in this photo that demonstrates practices that the University of Delaware is doing that promote sustainability: these include brick sidewalks and terraces, which allow drainage into the ground rather than creating runoff as concrete or asphault do, and the ample bike racks, encouraging bicycle use. Also note that there is no parking allowed along this street, which is a major through street in the heart of Newark, DE.
