These Rome apples, produce code 4171, were for sale at the Newark, Delaware Farmer's Market, for 89 cents a pound. These Rome apples show the characteristic round shape of this variety.
Although Rome apples are usually used mainly as a cooking apple (primarily for baking), I actually find them to be considerably more enjoyable for eating fresh. They are somewhat less sweet than most of the mainstream varieties, which I like; they still taste plenty sweet to me. However, if given the choice, I strongly prefer McIntosh to Rome for eating, or for most purposes.
