Granny smith apples, bright yellowish green with some pink on them

Feb 27th, 2011, by Alex Zorach

These Granny Smith apples were for sale at the Newark, Delaware farmer's market, for 89 cents a pound. This particular batch had an unusual pink tinge on them; I usually do not see such a bold pinkish or reddish color to apples of this variety, which tend to be a more straight green color.

Granny smith apples tend to be tart and crisp, but still with some sweetness. Of all the mainstream varieties of apple that tend to be available year-round (from Washington state usually), these are the ones I like the most. That said, I strongly prefer local apples and I tend not to buy many apples out of season. In terms of varieties, I still strongly prefer McIntosh; in my opinion, it offers all the qualities I like about Granny Smiths, and yet has a richer, more pleasing aroma, and often has a significantly smaller size, a plus for me.
