Black plums, a rich dark purple and red color, with shiny skin

Feb 27th, 2011, by Alex Zorach

Black plums, for sale at the Newark, Delaware Farmer's Market for 99 cents a pound, in February. I tend to not buy these plums when they are not in season in the United States, but I have found that the plums shipped in from California and South America (mostly Chile) tend to be better quality than peaches.

These fruit are very juicy and have a sweet flesh that becomes pleasantly tangy close to the pit. They are best when allowed to ripen enough that the fruit becomes soft to the touch, beginning to feel almost like a water balloon.
