Sweet Onions, Red and White in album food
In Albums: food produce onions

These sweet onions were for sale for 75 cents a piece at the Clark Park Farmer's Market in West Philadelphia. The term "sweet onion" does not apply to any particular cultivar, but rather, can refer to any variety of onion that is sweeter and less sharp in flavor.
I did not buy these particular onions, but I must say, they look absolutely beautiful. Compared to the normal bruised up onions sold in bins in most supermarkets, these look absolutely pristine, nearly flawless in shape and texture. While I usually like to peel off and discard the outermost layer or two of most onions I buy at stores, with these I would dig right in and eat the whole thing. Since the outer layers take up quite a lot of space, you are getting a little bit more of what you're paying for when you buy onions like these. I also like the way the stems are still attached; onion stems are useful as a vegetable on their own; they can be thrown in soup for flavor (and taken out if they are too tough), and the bottom of the stem can be peeled and thinly sliced, used like a larger and more robust version of a scallion.
