Shaker Lakes, Frozen in album nature
Mar 12th, 2003, by Alex Zorach
This is a photo of a frozen lake in the Shaker Lakes in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in the Cleveland metro area. The photo shows a small band of thawed water, betraying that the temperature has been close to freezing and above it for some time, which is the norm in much of the winter in Northeast Ohio, where the proximity to Lake Erie, which functions as a thermal reservoir, keeps the temperatures warmer than they would be inland.
This photo is taken from an area that is in the middle of fairly old suburbs, but you can hardly see the evidence of humans in this picture, but there are a few clues that this area is not completely natural.
The distance shows a few pines, I think white pines. These pine trees are planted, along a road which is not visible in the picture. This area would grow exclusively as deciduous trees naturally, owing to the soil here, rich in organic matter, which favor deciduous trees.
