A mural painted on concrete under a bridge, depicting bicyclists in a bicycle race

Jul 16th, 2011, by Alex Zorach

This mural of bicyclists in a bicycle race is painted on the northern wall on this underpass in which Race street goes underneath I-95 in Philadelphia.

I love murals painted on underpasses and underneath bridges, like this one. These areas can be bleak and depressing to walk underneath. They tend to be dirty and poorly maintained. A mural can impart color and a cheerful ambiance. This particular mural is very nice as it depicts a cheerful, fast-moving outdoor scene, with lots of nature (trees and water) on a bright day. It's a much more pleasant scene than the reality of this underpass, which features heavy truck traffic, gravel, and some random pieces of trash scattered about.
