A Few Golden Raspberries in with Red Raspberries in album food
Aug 6th, 2011, by Alex Zorach
I bought this container of raspberries at the Clark Park Farmer's Market in West Philadelphia. This batch consisted mostly of red raspberries but contained a few golden raspberries.
Golden raspberries are a particular cultivar of raspberry that has a lighter, orangish-golden color. When I was young I used to call them "yellow raspberries". My grandmother had a few bushes that produced these raspberries and I found them interesting and would get really excited about them. The bushes themselves were rather feeble, growing much less vigorously than the nearby red raspberry plants, and the yield from these bushes was always very low.
In the end, though, I think red raspberries actually taste a lot better. I find the golden raspberry a fascinating example of how scarcity can make people more interested in something, and desire it more strongly, even if there are no innate attributes of the object or good that would cause us to like it. Still, sometimes golden raspberries can be interesting for adding color to a bunch of raspberries, like these. They certainly grabbed my attention and got me to buy a container of raspberries that I probably would not have otherwise bought.
