Nuclear Power
Nuclear power has the potential to provide a long-lasting energy source for humankind. However, there are grave risks associated with the use of nuclear power. Here at Cazort.net, we believe not only in long term prosperity, but in the stability and safety of human society. Cazort.net is opposed to all forms of nuclear power.
Why?
- Waste Disposal - Even when nuclear power proceeds without accident, it generates "nuclear waste", which needs to be carefully stored, and which can be extremely hazardous to humans and to the natural environment if it is released. There is no ideal solution to the nuclear waste problem, and the amount of waste created gets continuously more expensive as nuclear power continues to be used.
- Military Escalation - One cannot forget that nuclear power is intimately tied to the use of nuclear weapons. When a country, whether large or small, whether dictatorship or democracy, engages in a nuclear program behind closed doors, there is no way to ensure that they are not creating nuclear weapons. Cazort.net is a strong supporter of nuclear non-proliferation, and we believe using nuclear power undermines these goals, because it gives an excuse to rogue nations to enter into a "nuclear energy" program, which masks a nuclear weapons program.
- Risk of Accident - Nuclear power is inherently risky. Nuclear reactions must be carefully controlled, or they can cause a nuclear explosion, releasing massive quantities of radiation into the environment. Such disasters are impossible to completely clean up, and can cause areas to become permanently uninhabitable, as well as causing widespread cancer from radiation exposure, and irreparable damage to the environment in a broader area. Nuclear power plants also make attractive targets for terrorism, and this increases their risk as well as the cost of securing them. Nuclear power puts the future well being of humans and the environment into the hands of a large, bureacratic regulatory system that is not transparent and that citizens have little control over. The safety problems of nuclear power are the primary reasons that Cazort.net opposes nuclear power.
An example of a small accident would be Three Mile Island, and examples of a large accident would be Chernobyl, or the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011. For more information on the Chernobyl catastrophe, visit the Chernobyl Information Page. Here is a government site downplaying the TMI accident, and a non-governmental site discussing the health implications.
The alternative?
As a solution to our energy needs, cazort.net recommends reduction of energy use, coupled with solar and wind power. This solution is not currently viable; however, our economy could be restructured in such a way that it would be.
