A wooden zigzag path in an open forest

Aug 23rd, 2006, by Alex Zorach

I love this zigzag path, which is located on the east side of White Clay Creek, in White Clay Creek State Park, Delaware. This path is located south of where the new bridge was constructed, but I actually took this photo long before the new bridge was built, so I walked the whole way up to the bridge near Wedgewood Road, and then south along the east side of the creek, to take this picture.

Although I love the way this path looks (it feels somewhat magical and whimsical), I suspect that its sharp turns are actually a result of practicality and necessity: this path goes over a damp area and it was probably easier to built a path that zigzagged. Although, who knows? Maybe someone just thought it looked cool.
