Photo of an American Robin nest in a cedar (Juniper) bush, showing characteristic round shape, with one blue egg visible, and a few nestlings

Jun 4th, 2006, by Alex Zorach

This photo shows the nest of an American Robin, with one unhatched egg visible, and several newly hatched nestlings. Baby robins are rather ugly, looking almost naked but covered by fine hairs.

This is the same nest that I photographed earlier with four eggs in it. A few days later I returned and the nest was empty. I did not see any juvenile robins in the area, so it is possible that something ate them, but I also wasn't tracking them carefully or even checking the nest ever day, so it is perfectly possible that the birds were successfully fledged.
