These Portabella mushrooms were for sale at Iovine's produce corner in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, for $5.49 a pound. Formerly viewed as a specialty mushroom, portabellas have become rather mainstream.
The portabella mushroom is a large mushroom with a short stem. The cap is the part of interest. Because of their large size and round shape, they are sometimes used in place of burgers on sandwiches. I am personally not a fan of portabellas; I find them uninteresting and I do not like their flavor; they taste very similar to the basic "button mushrooms" which are the default mushroom in most of the U.S. This makes sense, as they are actually from the same species, Agaricus bisporus. I dislike button mushrooms and I find portabellas to offer little improvement.
