Black Locust, Leafing Out in Spring in album trees

This photo shows a black locust tree, Robinia pseudoacacia, leafing out in spring. This particular tree is a landscape plant, on the south green of the University of Delaware's campus, although you cannot tell this from the photo. It is clearly a horticultural variety, rather than a natural form of the tree, as it is thornless, and black locusts naturally have thorns.

I love the patterns made by the branches on this particular tree; you can only see these patterns in winter and early spring; once the tree leafs out, the branches are obstructed from view by the leaves.
