A basket with bell peppers and large sweet peppers in many different colors: red, green, purple, white

This photo shows a colorful assortment of sweet peppers for sale at the Clark Park Farmer's Market in West Philadelphia, the morning of the day on which Hurricane Irene came through.

This is a particularly colorful batch of peppers. I have certainly not tried all of these peppers. The white pepper grabbed my attention, and I was curious about it, but did not buy it. I actually tend to avoid white vegetables, as darker-colored vegetables tend to be healthier and more nutritious, as the chemicals responsible for the colors in fruit and vegetables are often essential nutrients or other beneficial chemicals, like beta carotein or anthocyanins.

Note that although these are all sweet peppers, they are not all bell peppers. There are red cubanelle peppers, and red banana peppers. Both have a radically different flavor from red bell peppers...they are all sweet, and share some similarities, but the ripe cubanelles have an interesting herbaceous quality absent in the bell peppers.
