Aprium (Apricot-Plum Hybrid), Sliced in album produce
Sep 11th, 2011, by Alex Zorach
This photo shows a sliced aprium. A short while back, I saw these fruit for sale for the first time; you can see the photo of these fruit marked as aprium plums. After posting the first photo, I was curious and went back to buy one and try it. I was very pleased with the result.
In contrast to pluots, which I think are more 50-50 apricot-plum hybrids, I think the aprium is more apricot than plum. The fruits are about apricot-sized, and the exterior is mostly fuzzy, like an apricot. The interior also has an apricot-like color and texture. The plum-like characteristics that this fruit inherits are primarily the flavor and aroma, and the deep red exterior.
Eating this fruit was like eating a really good red plum, with the floral, honey-like aroma and intense sweetness, but with the firm texture of an apricot. It was very pleasing and I would definitely buy them again. At $3.99 a pound, however, they are not cheap, so it would be unilikely that these became a staple food in my household unless the price came down considerably. They're good, but now $3.99 a pound good, especially when outstanding Italian prune plums are competing at $0.99 cents a pound, and local pears and apples sometimes even undercutting them at 50 cents a pound.
