Crimini-Mushrooms, Organic in album mushrooms
Aug 7th, 2011, by Alex Zorach
This photo shows organic crimini mushrooms for sale at the Fair Food Farmstand at the Reading Terminal market in Philadelphia. These mushrooms are certified organic, and were grown by Mother Earth Mushrooms, located in Kennett Square, PA. They were sold for $5.00 a pound, only a dollar more than the less attractive looking crimini mushrooms, sold by Iovine's produce corner, which were not certified organic. I think this is a very good price for these mushrooms, which looked and smelled very fresh.
Crimini mushrooms are actually from the same species of mushroom as the regular button mushrooms, and they taste very similar. The only difference is the dark color of the cap. If these mushrooms were allowed to grow and mature further, they would become portabella mushrooms.
I did not buy any of these mushrooms because I do not like these, or indeed, any of the mushrooms from this species, the common mushroom Agaricus bisporus. I like all other types of mushroom I have ever tried, except for this one species.
