This photo, taken from National Park, NJ, shows the Philadelphia skyline on the right, behind the Delaware river. The machinery on the left is part of the shipyard at the Phialdelphia Navy Yard.
This area is very near Philadelphia as the crow flies--there are more distant points within the city limits. Psychologically and culturally, however, this area is very far from Philly. People in this area generally identify with south Jersey and do not generally think of themselves as part of the Philly metro area, in spite of the fact that this area is just a little over 20 minutes by car from center city. This identification may be due to the fact that there is no direct bridge across the Delaware river in this area: one must travel quite a ways northeast to find a bridge, and there is no bridge anywhere nearby to the west. This area is also far enough from the PATCO line that it is time-consuming to get into Philly from here on transit.
