This photo shows six male brown-headed cowbirds on a fence, at Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia, PA. I also took a closeup photo of one of these cowbirds which clearly shows the field marks and features that can be used to identify this common and distinctive bird.

These birds are native to the grasslands and prairie areas of North America, and are a nomadic species. They did not naturally live on the east coast of the U.S., where the habitat was mostly forested. However, with human influence, the creation of open areas allowed their range to greatly expand. This meadow-like area provides an ideal habitat for them.
