Core Beliefs:
These are the core beliefs, agreed upon by consensus, in an inter-faith religious group that some of my friends and I are in the process of forming. These beliefs are closely related to the rules of communication in the same group. Both are works in progress, although the rules of communication are relatively more well-established.
- All people are valuable.
- There is a state of being of people, groups of people, and culture, which is healthy and desirable. This state:
- encompasses the individual: beliefs, thoughts, physical health, feelings, actions, life circumstances, and social relationships.
- encompasses the group: social relationships, culture, and relationships to the physical world and other living beings.
- People think clearly.
- People believe with certainty the things that they have enough information to know with certainty, but do not have a false sense of certainty about uncertain truths.
- People treat each other with respect.
- People's emotions are empowering (flowing into or motivating constructive actions).
- People communicate honestly.
- People take responsibility for their actions, and do not take responsibility for things beyond their control.
- People feel like their basic needs are met.
Starting Points:
These starting points are intended to be statements that nearly everyone in our society would agree with, but that we consider to be good things to think about or focus on. It will not necessarily be possible to derive our beliefs from these statements, but we hope that our beliefs will be congruent with these statements in easily-apparent ways.
- People have different beliefs.
