Many rome apples, red with some yellow, very round

Feb 27th, 2011, by Alex Zorach

These Rome apples, produce code 4171, were for sale at the Newark, Delaware Farmer's Market, for 89 cents a pound. These Rome apples show the characteristic round shape of this variety.

Although Rome apples are usually used mainly as a cooking apple (primarily for baking), I actually find them to be considerably more enjoyable for eating fresh. They are somewhat less sweet than most of the mainstream varieties, which I like; they still taste plenty sweet to me. However, if given the choice, I strongly prefer McIntosh to Rome for eating, or for most purposes.
