Purple Peppers, Lighter in Color in album peppers

Purple bell peppers, a lighter purple with some paler areas, next to cucumbers and yellow-green bell peppers

These purple bell peppers were for sale at the Fair Food Farmstand in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, for $5.50 a pound. They were produced at the Landisdale Farm in Jonestown, PA, and are certified organic. I find this price very high for peppers.

These peppers are also rather pale looking. I have had much darker purple peppers, such as the purple peppers in an earlier photo. In general, all other things being equal, darker-colored fruits and vegetables are healthier as they are higher in pigments, which tend to be biologically active compounds that act as antioxidants, and sometimes include essential nutrients like Vitamin A.

This photo also shows yellow-green bell peppers on the left, and pickling cucumbers on the right.
