A pond surrounded by forest, with dark gray water, trees overhanging the pond, with brightly-illuminated leaves in the sunlight

This is a photo of the iron pits at Iron Hill Park in Newark, Delaware.

This park has an interesting history to it; as the name suggests, the area is a large hill (the largest for quite a ways around) and was used for iron mining. The former mine pits were left open, and filled with water; due to the iron and exposed minerals, the water turns this unusual blackish color. These pits are very easy to access; if you drive into the park and park at the main parking lot, you can find these pits very easily by heading north into the woods and looking to the east.

I love this photo as it shows unusual lighting...the unusually dark color of the water, contrasting with the very bright color of the leaves reflecting the bright sunlight on this sunny day in August.
