A stone cathedral in winter, surrounded by large greenish-tan lawns and bare trees

This photo shows the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, in Bryn Athyn, PA. This cathedral is the central place of worship of the New Church community located in Bryn Athyn, PA.

This Cathedral is a peculiar building, and has been constructed in such a way as to reflect the central beliefs of the New Church, a religious group and sect of Christianity which embraces the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. Although the cathedral looks relatively regular and orderly on a larger spatial scale, each component of the cathedral is unique in shape and size, leading to an oddly irregular structure when you look up close. The cathedral, although mostly finished, is also unfinished, and has small ongoing bits and pieces of work continuously being carried out. According to my friends who are members of this community, this process symbolizes the fact that people are not perfect, and yet are on a continuous journey in which they are growing and changing and building on their own lives.
