Blue wood aster, showing many small light blue daisy-like flowers, with red centers

This photo shows a blue wood aster growing on the Grays Ferry Crescent Trail in Philadelphia.

The plant in this photo has fallen over, which is typical for its growth habit...although it often grows upright initially, its stem isn't particularly sturdy and it tends to fall over to the side if not supported by other plants. In a dense thicket of meadow-like plants, it will grow more upright, but this plant tends to grow in slightly shadier areas where it often has less structural support from surrounding plants, and falls over like this.
